Mobile phones ban for Austrian city

Mobile phones ban for Austrian city A ban was today imposed on the use of mobile phones on public transport in the Austrian city of Graz.

Indian website Top News reported that Mayor Siegfried Nagel, who happens to belong to the country's Conservative party, issued a regulation demanding mobile phones be switched to 'silent' to curb citizens' tendency to broadcast their business in phone conversations while travelling on buses and trains.

Mayor Nagel has also taken the opportunity to ban loud music on the public transport system - moves which have won him considerable cross-party support.

However, there are concerns as to how the new rule will be enforced as there will be no fines for offenders flouting it.

Perhaps the people themselves will enforce the initiative - a recent poll by a regional paper in the southern Austrian city found that 68 per cent welcomed the idea.

Mobile phones have been banned in many British schools in an attempt to end disruption to lessons. Some schools have even banned teachers from using them except in approved lessons.
