Mobile phone users tracked for science

Mobile phone users tracked for science The movements of over 100,000 people have been tracked via their mobile phones in the interests of science.

Researchers at Northeastern University, Boston, USA, have been looking into the habits and geographical patterns of their participants in order to decipher how it is we live our lives.

It was found that most people will move less than six miles in any given journey, and that mobile phone users tend to visit the same small number of places over and over again.

The news comes as a reminder of the future of mobile phone technology, while at the same time Apple is launching its Worldwide Developer Conference, a meeting in which developers of software can meet to discuss future applications for the hugely popular iPhone.

In the meantime, there remains a high demand for making use of the mobile phones already in our pockets.

"It would be wonderful if every (mobile) carrier could give universities access to their data because it's so rich," admitted author Dr Marta Gonzalez of Northeastern University to science journal, Nature.

Speaking to the BBC in light of the news, Dr William Webb, head of research and development at Ofcom, said that "this is just the tip of the iceberg".
