Mobile handsets said to aid contingency planning
Modern technology has made it a lot simpler for businesses to carry out contingency planning, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Kelly Ostler-Coyle, a spokesperson for the industry body, pointed in particular to the latest mobile phone technology such as BlackBerry handsets.
"It's a lot easier now to communicate with people from outside of the workplace than it has been in the past," she observed.
The ABI expert posited that the ability to provide employees with laptops and mobile handsets, allowing them to work from home, was also advantageous.
"It is easier now to put contingencies in place in the event of an emergency," Ms Ostler-Coyle continued, "especially with things being online."
And though remote communication can present other issues, "there are more solutions to fix the problem now."
Recent research by AXA Insurance has shown that seven in ten businesses would not be able to survive in the event of a major emergency.
At the beginning of this month, the ABI launched a new campaign designed to help small firms in the UK form effective contingency plans.
