Mobile Phone Masts Shut off in New Delhi

Mobile Phone Masts Shut off in New Delhi The authorities in Noida near New Delhi have shut down about 300 mobile phone masts, a third out of a total of 1000 in the area. Authorities are upholding a ban on commercial activity in residential areas which has been in place for decades, despite the fact most of the mobile phone towers have been in place for years.

As a result, mobile phone services in the area have been disrupted and there has been a huge impact on users there. This is due to the fact that mobile phone usage far exceeds the availability of landlines in India and this includes even urban areas.

India is one of the fastest growing mobile phone markets in the world and leading companies such as Vodafone and Bharti Airtel share the towers, according to the Financial Times.

SC Khanna, secretary general of the Association of the Unified Telecom Service Providers of India said: “You cannot live without the mobile phone these days, and without towers, mobile phones will not work.”

However, the towers placed out of action account for only a fraction of a total of over 8,000 spread out over the extensive Uttar Pradesh region. Nevertheless, it represents a clash between the needs of a technological society and the arbitrariness of applying old, established rules.

Secretary General of the Cellular Operators Association, T R Dua said: “No attempt has been made to dialogue with the operators. In 1998, they declared telecoms was infrastructure. Now you suddenly say, ‘No, it’s a commercial activity'.”

According to mobile phone operators in the area there were cuts to power supplies to towers over the weekend by the authorities in Noida who were applying a 2002 Allahabad High Court Order. The Telecoms Industry and Industowers, a partnership between Vodafone and Idea, Bharti Airtel and Tata-Quippo have appealed to the Allahabad High Court for a decision to restore the towers.
