Microsoft and Nokia Issue Statement of Intent
The joining of forces means the biggest mobile phone company in the world, Nokia, can offer smartphones with Microsoft software built in, BBC News has reported.
Nokia mobile phones will now come with Microsoft packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint built into them. This will ensure Nokia smartphones can really compete with BlackBerry, which is currently dominating the smartphone market.
Robert Andersson from Nokia said: “This is giving some of our competitors – let’s spell it out, Research In Motion – a run for their money. I don’t think Blackberry has seen this kind of competition we can provide them now.”
Keen to move forward with the partnership, Nokia and Microsoft have both said they will begin “collaborating immediately” and the Microsoft packages will be available on Nokia mobile phones from 2010.
A joint statement said: “These solutions will be available for a broad range of Nokia smartphones, starting with the Nokia E series. The two companies will also market these solutions to businesses, carriers and individuals.”
Commenting on the announcement, Nick Jones, Gartner research vice-president and analyst, said: “It is also good for the Microsoft divisions responsible for Office, Exchange, Sharepoint, OCS and SystemCentre. They will have more potential users and be able to sell more software.”
In a partnership which holds mutual benefits, the joining up of Nokia and Microsoft will bolster both businesses. It will enable Microsoft to advance its status in the mobile email and communications market and allow Nokia to offer a smartphone which can compete with the likes of BlackBerry.
