Microsoft About to Sell Kin Handsets Online

Microsoft About to Sell Kin Handsets Online Microsoft is to start selling its new Kin mobile phones online tomorrow Thursday 5 May. It is using the US’s largest mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless and will be selling the new devices in stores from 13 May.

Microsoft is looking to recover ground in the burgeoning smartphone market against Apple and Google.

According to ABI Research there was a fall in devices running Microsoft’s Windows operating system to 7.9 per cent of the world’s smartphone market in the final quarter of 2009. This was down from 12.5 per cent from the previous year. However, there was a rise in the use of Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android software far outstripping Microsoft.

The new Kin mobile phones are targeted at young mobile phone users who are fond of social networking to keep in touch with friends. They can access music through Microsoft’s Zune system as long as they sign up for a Windows Live Account first, reports businessweek.com.

Eric Hermelee product management director for Microsoft’s mobile communications business said: “The stage of life and who these people are, they’re exploring, sharing and trying to define themselves. We’re trying to be authentic to the brand.”

Last month, Brian Hall General Manager for Windows Live said in an interview that his company was working on improvements to its Windows Live products. These would have as a main feature social video chat services displaying social network updates.

By the autumn the new mobile phones will be available in Europe – the UK, Spain, Italy and Germany - through Vodafone.
