Jobcentre Plus Offers Mobile Access to Vacancies
The popular UK government employment service, Jobcentre Plus, has launched an app to give job seekers even more ways to find their dream occupation.
According to an ITProPortal article, the app allows mobile users to search for jobs with keywords, location-specific filtering, and maps that indicate the location of the workplace.
The app is free to download and can be accessed by Apple's iPhone and Android-based smartphones. Users in England, Scotland, and Wales will have access to the app.
Jim Knight, the minister of state for employment and welfare, is optimistic about the benefits of the app. He said: “Now people have access to our vacancies, and that's just the start. As we develop the app, it will automatically push out notifications to people of new vacancies in their area.”
According to Mr. Knight, the government is developing the app to ultimately be available on all smartphone and mobile phone platforms. Jobcentre Plus itself is planning to expand across the UK, with 50 new centres across the country in development.
This is envisioned to provide both technical and practical support to help people create their CVs and find work.
Some critics have questioned the use of searching for jobs on a mobile device when it can as easily be done on a PC. Furthermore, mobile device users can search through vacancies, but not apply for the jobs themselves. This is done by contacting Jobcentre with a reference code for the vacancy of interest.
Proponents however offer the counter-argument that many job-seekers do not have access to PCs. In light of the fact that 13 per cent of Jobcentre jobs now require digital applications, it makes sense to offer more avenues of access to reach more applicants.
