Job Fears as Orange Closes Call Centre
In what has come to a shock to many, Orange told staff at a call centre in Bristol that it was planning to close down the site.
The Communication Workers Union told Sky News that the New Year “bombshell” caused many workers to burst into tears after hearing the news. Such was the trauma that the centre had to be closed for the day.
A union spokesman told Sky News that this was uncalled for: “This bombshell is a betrayal of a loyal and hard-working workforce. People have struggled into work through appalling weather only to be told they are losing their jobs.
“We don't know if there will be any chance of deploying to other centres, but the nearest Orange call centre is in Plymouth.”
Sky News was told the reason for the closure of the centre was due to being part of an efficiency drive.
There has been a statement which said staff would be given the chance of relocating or working for other departments, which an Orange spokesman explained: “We take pride in our people and what we proposed with the closure of the Keypoint site in Bristol is a change to our people's work location. 500 of the 800 people who currently work in the Keypoint building will be relocated to other buildings in the Bristol campus.
“The remaining 300 people - who work for our service department at Keypoint - will be offered another post and a relocation package to our service centres in Plymouth, North Tyneside and Darlington.”
