Highways Agency Scores with Traffic App
According to a Computer Weekly report, the Highways Agency has reached the auspicious position of fourth most downloaded for its newly released iPhone app. The application provides users with live updates of traffic flow on motorways and A-roads in the UK.
A press release at Article Ant indicated that more than 50,000 people downloaded the free application in the first few days after its launch. Simon Sheldon-Wilson, the director of traffic management at the Agency, said: “By making our information freely available we are making it easier for people to plan their journeys.”
Mr. Sheldon-Wilson also noted that the application has potential long-term consequences for the environment. He said: “A few moments checking the route ahead before people set off can help us all cut congestion, save fuel and reduce carbon emissions.”
By connecting directly to the national traffic control centre, the app provides information with up-to-the-minute accuracy. It works by identifying the current location of the user and displaying planned roadwords and live traffic updates in the area.
The agency's network includes vehicle sensors beneath the road surface, CCTV cameras, and patrol reports. The application even tunes in to the Highways Agency's digital radio station.
Those without iPhones do not need to feel left out, as they can access updates from the agency's website.
According to Computer Weekly, users do not yet need to worry about privacy. The Highways Agency is not currently using mobile phone location data to monitor traffic flow. If the decision for such a measure is made, it will only be after carefully considering all the privacy issues involved.
