Google to Launch Own Brand Smartphone

Google to Launch Own Brand Smartphone Google is all set to compete with mobile phone providers with its own brand handset, with a phone service providing free calls.

Google has already dabbled in the mobile sector, launching its Android operating system on the HTC G1 mobile (often confused as the first Google phone), but this handset will be the first official Google phone bearing the company logo.

Google have continued their working partnership with HTC to make the new handset, which will be one of the most sophisticated smartphones in the world when it is released.

Linking together with Google's own phone service Google Voice, it will have a touch screen display and a super-fast processor, far exceeding the iPhone 3G S.

Just as Google Maps Navigation upset a lot of the major sat-nav manufacturers, Google’s ambitious plans for mobiles are likely to rile mobile phone operators.

The competition face being effectively frozen out of voice and text revenues by the new service. However, Google will still need to rely on competitors as it negotiates a deal to to provide 3G and WiFi networks.

Online calling service Skype is also under threat from Google Voice, as the program could supersede a market well cornered by Skype and attracting healthy revenue.

The move will also upset the increasing number of mobile phone manufacturers who use the Android operating system. Mr Mawston said: “A Google-branded device will see the company compete with the very manufacturers that it works with” adding: “The proposed move is high risk and high reward, but Google’s ultimate goal is to get some eyeballs in mobile.”
