Google Mobile Launches Search by Senses
Google is improving its search applications on smartphones by changing the nature of its search engine to use different senses with which to search.
If you have Android version 1.6 or above, then you can benefit from two new services launched by Google. The first is the wonderfully named Google Goggles, a reality app allowing you to capture an image then send it to the Goggles service.
In Google's mobile blog the company explained that if Google recognises the item, then it will send as much information as possible to you about the item. Currently, items include recognisable landmarks and works of art but the company expects the database to expand with demand.
What’s Nearby is the second offering, and this is a search add-on for Google Maps. All you have to do is choose your location and What’s Nearby will inform you of ten places to be in that region.
According to the official Google site, What's Nearby is available for those with Android 1.6+ devices, as an update from Android Market. A similar device will very soon become available to users of iPhones and Android devices.
What’s Nearby is marketed as an excellent app for those who have a little time to kill in a specific area with which they may be unfamiliar. The website cites picking up children earlier than expected or checking into a hotel.
If you are looking for something to do quickly, then the app can inform you of what is around you that may be of interest. Google has also announced future plans that will show local product inventory in search results and Google Suggest which will include location-specific search terms.
