Google Delays Launch of Nexus One in UK
It seems that Google has been forced to delay the launch of its first smartphone, the Nexus One by a fortnight, until mid April 2010.
The Guardian has reported that the leading search engine has encountered a number of difficulties along the way, chiefly related to the areas of aftersales and of establishing a proper back-end for customer support.
There is nothing wrong with the mobile phone itself, but Nexus One customers are unhappy about Google’s continued reliance upon emails and online knowledge bases to support its non-business user base. The company has had to move from email to telephone support for customers seeking assistance.
Google has found three ways to sell its new smartphone. It will either sell the device directly (as a SIM free model), through third parties such as Play, or Expansys which lists it for more than £600, or on a monthly two-year £35 contract via Vodafone.
The delay will probably spell an advantage for Google’s direct competitors who will make their new devices available from the beginning of April 2010.
Vodafone will be launching three other Android mobile phones at the same time, the Legend, the X10 and the HTC Desire. There are also reports that Goldman Sachs has made major cutbacks in distributing the Nexus One worldwide due to the intense competition from the many other Android smartphones due to be released shortly.
The only significant difference between the Desire and the Nexus is that the HTC Desire uses an optical track ball.
According to ITProPortal.com, T-Mobile has already begun to take pre-orders on the HTC Desire which is to be carried by all five major network providers
