Google Astonished at Steve Jobs Android Accusations

Google Astonished at Steve Jobs Android Accusations Google's Android boss Hugo Barra was said to be "astonished" at recent revelations about Steve Jobs having accused Google of stealing iOS features for Android.

The newly-released Steve Jobs biography contains details about the Apple boss’s fury at what he saw as blatant copying by Google of features in the Apple iOS software. After being informed about the story by a Guardian journalist, Google’s product development director for Android was reported as responding in astonishment: "he said that?" However, when pressed further on specific details of the new Ice Cream Sandwich Android incarnation and their similarity to new features in iOS 5, Mr Barra refused to be drawn into the discussion, saying "I'm not going to get into this."

Steve Jobs was reported as having sworn to "destroy Android" after seeing features in HTC’s Android 2.1 phones back in 2010. Walter Isaacson, the official biographer for Steve Jobs, said Jobs had vowed "I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this," and "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40bn in the bank, to right this wrong." Isaacson also writes about a subsequent meeting between Jobs and Google Boss Eric Schmidt, during which Jobs demanded that Google stop using Apple’s ideas in their phones.

Apple began a lawsuit against HTC, accusing it of infringing 20 of its patents, but the legal battle goes on to this day, with HTC counter-suing the Californian tech giant. Apple has already won the battle over one patent, covering technology Apple introduced to turn phone numbers and addresses into clickable links. The US International Trade Comission ruling makes an import ban on HTC handsets in the US possible, although the Taiwanese have appealed against the Commission's decision.

Competition and evolution

Just like in nature, you need competition and diversification to evolve quickly and survive. Apple does things almost perfectly, but they cannot develop phones and software as quickly as the Android platform can with it's multiple hardware choices. In the end it will win simply out of speed of change and adaptability. For example, the new iPhone 4S doesn't have a 4G radio, which forget all the cool stuff and dual-core blah blah blah, the network is still very slow on an iPhone unless you're on Wi-Fi.
