Google Android Soaring in Popularity

Google Android Soaring in Popularity Google’s Android wireless operating system is becoming so popular that it will be second only to Nokia's OS in the near future.

Analysts estimate that in three years' time Android will become the second most widely used OS by mobile internet users.

In a report published earlier this week, market research firm IDC predicted that, by the year 2013, the Android platform will outrun its competitors to reach second place after Nokia’s Symbian. Earlier, Garner Inc had made a similar prediction of Google's impending ascension in the mobile market.

At the moment, Research in Motion which manufactures the BlackBerry holds second place followed by Apple in third for the most popular mobile OS. It is a different story in the US where BlackBerry is the market leader and Symbian has very little share.

An announcement from IDC said: “In a market that was once dominated by a handful of pioneers, such as BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile, newcomers touting open standards (Android) and intuitive design and navigation (Mac OS X and webOS) have garnered strong end-user and handset vendor interest,” ITProPortal reported.

IDC also said that the Android operating system would grow at a tremendous rate to 68 million units by the end of 2013 from the 700,000 units shipped in 2008. This means that it will grow at a much faster rate than its competitors.

In the US it will conquer Apple and Research in Motion, besting efforts from both BlackBerrys and the iPhone. It is envisaged, too, that Google’s Android could become the operating system of choice for laptops and desktops.
