Garmin - Beware Sat Nav Phone Charges Abroad
Be aware when you travel abroad of some hidden costs on your mobile phone bills. Roaming charges for using sat nav on a mobile abroad could cost as much as 20p a mile.
This is the warning from Garmin, who has issued the findings of research into the issue. Indeed, it could be that the overall phone bill is more than the cost of fuel used when travelling.
The research revealed that a trip from Calais to Paris using Google’s turn-by-turn navigation services on a mobile cost £36 in roaming charges, the equivalent of 20p per mile. Also, travellers are in danger of losing the service as new EU legislation has a €50 data cap, which can be removed should the traveller ask.
Garmin’s head of communications, Anthony Chmarny said: "Using free satellite navigation isn’t as free as it would like to make out, especially when you are using your mobile phone abroad. Many of the well known navigation products use the mobile phone network to download maps as they go, meaning people could end up with a nasty shock when their mobile phone bills arrive – the costs could be double that of the fuel used for the journey they were navigating."
Garmin, which has entered the mobile phone market with phones including the Garmin Asus Nuvifone M10, tested the route four times with the same results showing up on each test. This equates to between 12 to 13MB each journey of data. The cost is more on a pay as you go as opposed to contract but the cost is still high.
