Facebook Penetrates Russian Market Through Mobile Services
Until now, Russia has been one of the few countries where Facebook has not held sway. Traditionally, Russian social networkers have favoured local services over Facebook and its own VKontakte has left Facebook behind by tens of millions of users.
However, now this situation is set to change as Facebook has found a way to close that gap by using mobile phones. This has proved excellent for generating new users of social networking, one of the most attractive emerging markets globally.
The enterprise will benefit Russian mobile phone operators as it will attract new users while raising awareness of the possibilities of mobile internet. Such a growth will, in the long run, increase revenues as more people use data services on their mobile phones.
The Russian mobile phone industry is different from most Western markets in that pre-pay users comprise 90 per cent of its customer base. Russian mobile phone users pay for every call, text and piece of data they send or receive as well as for their handsets.
Facebook has found a solution to this problem in Facebook Zero, its free text version used by dozens of operators around the world. However, charges will be incurred every time a mobile phone user clicks on an external link.
The solution to this might be the new value added services (VAS) provided by Russian mobile phone operators. These will include all types of data transfer including sending pictures and emails, as well as internet access.
To enhance mobile phone users' enjoyment of the internet, Russian operators have begun to build and expand their 3G networks. The result of this has been that so far 16 per cent of new mobile customers have bought 3G mobile phones, and the trend looks set to continue.
