European Commission Limits Mobile Bill Shocks
Although mobile phones are probably the most convenient and entertaining gifts of modern technology, it is also true that their associated costs can be quite shocking.
This is especially the case when the bill at the end of a month of usage is much higher than anticipated.
In order to curb such “horrible shocks”, according to an article in The Independent, the European Commission has made the decision to intervene. Customers now have the option to ask operators to terminate their connection when the surfing bill reaches a predetermined limit.
According to The Next Web Europe, users who do not exercise this option will receive a warning when their bill reaches €50 (£45); this rule is to be implemented from 1 July. EU rules will also require operators to warn users if the bill reaches 80 per cent of the ceiling amount they have chosen.
The move is generally welcomed by users, especially those who spend considerable time visiting websites via their handsets. Neelie Kroes, the European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, also has no doubt that the move will benefit consumers.
The Commissioner said: “Protection against data roaming bill shocks is a useful step towards building customers’ confidence to use mobile networks to surf the internet when travelling around Europe. Such confidence is essential if people and businesses are to use the internet to its full potential.”
Network providers who do not comply with these rules will be subject to sanctions or other disciplinary action. In this way, users will be empowered to determine the affordability of their network usage.

Freedom of choice
Unlike the directive approach of the European Commission, the Roaming Guard application (www.roamingguard.com) allows you the freedom of choice between data you want available and that you choose not to receive.
