Directory enquiries free again for mobile users
Mobile users will once more be able to call the directory enquiries service for free - after listening to a 20-second advert.
Landline users will also be able to take advantage of the return to the good old days of free enquiries: 0800 100 100 will be the number to ring.
The move will save callers millions of pounds of years - the old 118 service, which replaced the free 192 service, was condemned as a rip-off by the National Audit Office.
Many consumers felt that directory enquiry operators working for 118 services were dragging out conservations deliberately to generate extra revenue for their employer.
But it will be best not to use the new service if you are in a hurry. A 20-second advert will have to be listened to before you get the vital information you are after.
According to the Press Association, advertisers who have signed up to get their message across include Alliance & Leicester, EDF Energy, NatWest, Asda, Pru Health and Eurostar.
