Daily Mail unveils free text service
The MailTXT service can be downloaded in the form of a Java application onto any mobile phone. Text messages sent between MailTXT members anywhere in the globe are free of charge.
The Mail hopes to offset any data charges the consumer incurs for the service, by crediting users half a pence per message which can be redeemed at its shopping site or used as coupons when buying an issue.
Messages sent to non-members will cost 5p per message to any mobile number in the world.
Guy Zitter, the Daily Mail managing director, said: "MailTXT provides us with the platform to find out more about them, so we can continue to deliver the kind of quality content and products that appeal to them most."
The Mail has frequently used marketing ploys in a bid to attract a greater solution. Recently it gave away a new album by Prince with the Mail On Sunday - causing many broadsheet readers - who traditionally dislike the paper's politics - to abandon their principles and furtively buy a copy.
