Compatibility Issues for New Apple iPhone 3G S Apps

Compatibility Issues for New Apple iPhone 3G S Apps A couple of things have emerged about the iPhone 3G S, notably the fact that with its upgraded specs, apps may not work on older models.

With an advanced CPU that increase the capabilities of the graphic content, top quality gaming apps are promised. However, according to endgadget.com, dedicated apps for the iPhone 3G S will not be compatible with older models of the iPhone.

It may not just be games that are affected – with a better camera, and the ability to take videos and use voice control, the iPhone apps that are created specifically for these features won’t be compatible with older models.

This creates a friction for Apple, who on the one hand are eager to push boundaries with the new iPhone 3G S, but on the other hand wish to maintain a simple and easy platform for developers to make apps. The reality of evolving technology may force Apple to splinter their app store for niche phones.

In other Apple news, a leak from Holland confirmed the internal RAM of the new model is 256MB running at 600Mhz. This is an upgrade from the 128MB which the vanilla 3G boasts.

The phone also includes a new PowerVR SGX graphics chip. This runs via OpenGL ES 2.0 which allows the total speed to be increased. The details were leaked through Dutch website, iLounge. The current iPhones both use a processor which runs at 412MHz, less than the 600Mhz of the iPhone 3G s. The iPod Touch fares slightly better, running at 532MHz.

Not right

I thought by buying the iPhone that I was all set with a phone for life with all the updates but I guess not. If I knew this when I bought my iPhone a few months ago, I would have stayed away...

Existing iPhone owners should be offered a discounted upgrade

Apple have been really sneaky about the release of the new iPhone 3G S. If a new phone was about to be released then I think most people would upgrade but they should have been made aware that a new model was being released.
