China hit by text spam attack

China hit by text spam attack A spam attack that involved almost half of China's mobile phone users receiving unwanted text messages from advertisers is being investigated by the country's authorities.

Ominously, spammers have been warned by the government that they must "correct their wrongdoing".

The commercial text messages were sent to over 200 million mobile phone users through two companies — China Mobile and its smaller rival, China Unicom.

China Mobile has vowed to block text messages originating from seven online advertising firms, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

A public apology was issued by Nasdaq-traded Focus Media Holding Ltd., an advertising network operator.

"There was nothing pornographic in the messages, just some ads," a company spokeswoman for Focus, who refused to give her first name, told Associated Press.

The scandal has been dubbed 'Text-message Gate' by the Chinese media -though, unlike the first ever Gate scandal - America's Watergate - it is unlikely to lead to the resignation of the country's leader.
