Car Maker to Branch into Mobile Phones
Most people consider Hyundai to be synonymous with the production of reasonably priced cars. Now the company has branched out into the production of mobile telephones and plans to have a range of 25 in stores throughout Europe by the end of the spring.
Next month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Hyundai plans to unveil a range of handsets targeted at the United Kingdom market. This includes a strong contender in the form of a Windows Smartphone.
There is also speculation that the company may also be able to announce production of a cut-price competitor to Apple’s successful iPod. It have decided to target the iPod as opposed to the iPhone.
At present Hyundai has some eight models currently available in Europe and plans to have another 10 to 15 available during the course of 2009. The hope is that it can become a serious contender for a market share in the highly lucrative mobile communications business which is currently dominated by the likes of Sony Ericcson and Nokia.
Many of us, of course, already own a mobile phone so the desire to own another one may just have to be subdued, especially given today’s current financial climate. However, Hyundai believes its mobile technology – including a Windows Smartphone – will be able to compete favourably in the marketplace.
It also hopes to produce the new handsets under the banners of ‘Lifestyle’, ‘Music’, ‘Innovation’ and ‘Basic’ thus giving everyone from the novice handset user to the techno-geek something to get their teeth into. Next month’s Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona will tell.
