BlackBerry Launches Torch 9800 Flagship
Research in Motion (RIM) has issued its new flagship smartphone, the ‘Torch’.
RIM has been keeping its BlackBerry devices pretty straightforward in recent months. The traditional standard screen and its trademark QWERTY keyboard have found their way onto most of the manufacturer’s devices.
However, with the launch of the Torch 9800, RIM is shaking things up a bit. Like the Palm Pre, the new device packs a large touchscreen and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. The 9800 also becomes the first RIM handset to come with BlackBerry’s latest firmware, OS6.
Also a first on the Torch 9800 is RIM’s latest web browser, aiming to be as efficient as possible to make the most out of users’ data plans. On its official blog, RIM commented: "We continue to believe that efficiency is an important advantage for our customers and an imperative for the wireless industry."
The sleek looking device packs a lot into its economic form. With 4GB of onboard storage, 512MB of RAM and a powerful 624Mhz processor, the handset outperforms a fair number of handsets on the market today.
Also on the latest BlackBerry device is Wi-Fi and HSDPA for slick web access. The company is finally making an effort to improve on its camera work and the 5MP camera with flash, auto-focus and face recognition is a big step forward. The snapper is also reported to have no shutter lag at all.
The Torch 9800 is a key product for the future of BlackBerry, and the company will be hoping to lure customers away from the immensely popular iPhone 4.
The company’s official blog was keen to emphasise the importance of the phone: "The launch of the BlackBerry Torch with BlackBerry 6 is one of the most significant launches in our history and this amazing new smartphone brings together many of RIM’s core strengths into one fluid and superior user experience."
