BBC Launch New Apps but Reveal Displeasure with Industry
April sees the introduction of a number of new mobile apps from the BBC including news, sport and TV information.
Also planned are live and on demand material in audio and video format. The apps are initially available for the iPhone and iPod Touch before moving to become available for the BlackBerry and Android supported phones later on this year.
The launch of the BBC Sports app will coincide nicely with the Football FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa in June. This app enables fans to view live coverage of the games. Also available is live commentary from BBC Radio 5.
Launched at the Mobile World Congress, the announcement came with criticism of the industry’s lack of harmonisation.
Erik Huggers, BBC’s future media and technology director expressed dissatisfaction at the failure of the industry to allow apps to be standardised. He commented: “As a broadcaster we’re used to broadcasting once and the receivers just work…why should we have to reformat our apps for every device?”
This opinion was supported by Industry analyst Tony Cripps of Ovum. If the industry wanted to grow, he warned, then it would have to stop fragmenting devices as it hindered progress.
He said: “Even big content providers such as the BBC have financial constraints that will prevent them being able to reach all consumers equally. The cost of application development, porting, and maintenance is not trivial,” reported Mobile Today.
Mr Cripps called for a “common cross-platform application environment for devices.”
