Asus set to release Google Android smartphone under EEE banner

Asus set to release Google Android smartphone under EEE banner With the T-Mobile G1 set to hit the UK shops tomorrow, it appears the Google Android platform could extend beyond the G1 and make its way onto phones from other manufacturers.

The operating system (OS) is interesting computer company ASUS and reports are circulating that it could be set to launch a smartphone under the Eee brand name that could rival not only the G1, but Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion's BlackBerry.

DigiTimes has suggested that ASUS could be ready to launch a Taiwanese version of a Google Android 3G smartphone early next year, with plans to roll it out across the world in the months that follow.

The G1 was launched in the US earlier this week and attracted some negative attention after a team of security experts uncovered a flaw that could see users targeted by hackers, who could possibly install keystroke logging software and use it to spy on every button that is pressed on the desirable device.

However, Google and T-Mobile said they were looking at the problem and would have it rectified soon.

This seems to have appeased ASUS, as it is now looking to expand its smartphone offering to encompass the Android operating system.

Its current devices run on a Windows Mobile operating system but have had limited success in the market.

The company's Eee computer brand has a much more enviable reputation and the company could release the device under that umbrella.

The brand name would certainly give it a lift in the Asian market and would help the company to become a contender in the smartphone market.

Idealo.co.uk even suggests that the new phone could be named the Eee phone.

"Perhaps the company will even name the new open-source Android powered smartphone the Eee Phone," it said.

"And, considering some of the first Eee PCs came with a Linux OS preinstalled, ASUS clearly does not have an issue in producing products that run on non-Windows open-source systems."

The website suggests other computer manufacturers look keen to get in on the market too. Companies such as Acer and Dell have both been mentioned in connection with building a smartphone.

Recent reports also show Motorola having expressed an interest in launching a smartphone using the Google Android operating system.
