Aspen the Newest Greenheart Mobile Phone

Aspen the Newest Greenheart Mobile Phone The Sony Ericsson Aspen, with its BlackBerry type keyboard and touchscreen combination, offers a lighter alternative to bulky slider mobile phones such as the Motorola Milestone.

More significantly for the environment, it is a new green model in Sony Ericsson’s Greenheart range. Greenheart mobile phones, say the company, generate 15 per cent less CO2 than the company's standard models.

The Aspen is manufactured from recycled plastic and with water-based paints rather than the environmentally unfriendly solvent ones. It also has an online manual thus avoiding paper waste and a charger made from recycled plastic as well as some other eco-friendly features.

The Aspen’s operating system is the latest model of Windows Mobile, 6.5, also known as Windows Phone. It is compatible with a PC over USB and has support for Microsoft Exchange email. Users can edit Microsoft Office files including Word documents and Excel spreadsheets on their Aspen mobile phone handsets.

The downside of using an Aspen is that it has tiny icons and an out-of-date user interface. The latter is awaiting an update with the expected launch of Windows Mobile 7 in March.

Sony Ericsson has used multiple home screens called panels, but according to crave.cnet.co.uk this is cumbersome and over complicated, and is in need of simplification so that Windows Mobile becomes easier to use.

However, Windows Mobile does have a redeeming feature which is its free My Phone service. This is invaluable to the mobile phone user as it backs up their contacts and data to the Cloud. The service also helps to find a lost mobile phone by tracking it online or wipe it if this proves fruitless.

BlackBerry manufacturer RIM, known for its QWERTY keyboard is set to follow suit in the US with its upcoming BlackBerry Magnum.
