4.8 Million Android Phones Activated Monthly
The popularity of mobile devices running Google's Android OS is increasing rapidly, according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
Mr Schmidt revealed that around 160,000 Google Android devices are being activated each day, which equates to around 4.8 million per month. This number has grown since May 2010, when around 100,000 devices were being activated each day.
"We have seen a tremendous increase in adoption," Mr Schmidt said in an interview exclusive with Guardian.co.uk. "We've also seen a growth in the number of apps available for Android – there are now approximately 65,000 compared to only 50,000 a month ago."
According to Guardian.co.uk, the CEO also claimed that Android is on the way to reaching the volumes required to become a major mobile operating system, maybe even the equivalent of Windows on PCs.
Mr Schmidt said: "The advantage with Android is that anybody can use it. In many ways it is better than Windows because it's free, rather than Windows which had an ever-increasing price point."
According to findings from Gartner, a research firm, Google can expect to sell around 15 million devices using Android per quarter based on these figures. This compares to the 54 million devices that were sold in the whole of Q1 in 2010.
The announcement by Google was likely timed to coincide with Apple's release of its latest mobile device, but Mr Schmidt refrained from revealing market position compared to its major rivals. Apple declared last week that it was receiving 600,000 orders per day for the new iPhone 4, and that it was finding it hard to keep up with demand for the device.
