3 to be UK first Mobile Partner for Spotify
Following negotiations earlier this summer for 3 to become the first UK mobile phone carrier for Spotify, the operator will be selling the music subscription service packaged with free handsets in time for Christmas, according to a report from New Media Age.
This is to be the first time that the Spotify music service is to be included in mobile users’ monthly phone bills in the UK. So far, Spotify has been available on the HTC Hero, as well as other Android handsets from other operators.
The cost, although unknown as yet, is likely to be under £10.
The managing director of music consultancy Frukt, Jeremy Paterson, said that the new partnership would allow Spotify to develop further on account of its new access to 3’s marketing base and customer budgets. Mr Paterson explained: “Spotify has a fairly narrow demographic and isn’t yet a mainstream service. A deal like this will broaden its music base and take it to mobile phone shops in places like Barnsley.”
Spotify will now be in direct competition with fellow Scandinavian company Nokia, which has its own unlimited music download service, Comes With Music. Comes With Music was originally supported by 3 in October 2008 but the service is not held in too high regard. This new competition will enable Spotify to break out of early adopter circles and into more mainstream and less techy markets.
There will be a range of new handsets available through 3, although there are no details as yet. The range will include the Spotify handset from INQ for which further news is eagerly awaited.
