3 refuses to deny Skype mobile phone rumours
Speculation is rife that Skype is to announce a partnership with network provider 3 to launch its first branded mobile phone.
According to Reuters, Skype spokesman Chaim Haas has already confirmed that 3 and Skype "are working together on a new product to make Skype completely mobile," but could not give further details.
Sources from 3 refuse to confirm or deny reports that an announcement is to be made this week giving details of a new Skype mobile phone.
Skype software is already compatible on some phones sold by 3, but Skype is yet to manufacture a phone of its own. Such a device could be easier to use than current phone models that support Skype.
Reuters' sources say that Skype plans to introduce the phone in the countries where 3 has networks - Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
While the two companies won't confirm rumours of the new phone, eBay has admitted that reports of it trying to cut $1.2 billion off the $4.3 billion potential price it agreed to pay for Skype two years ago are true.
