3 Network Set To Improve in 2010

3 Network Set To Improve in 2010 According to the CEO of 3 UK, things are looking up and the network is to see some radical changes by the end of the year. These were the predictions of Kevin Russell at a breakfast briefing, details of which were released on the Mobile Choice website.

The phrase “shit hot” was used to refer to the proposed improved 3G network with Mr Russell aiming to change the perception of 3 as being a “weak network.”

By October, he has announced, approximately 13,000 masts and 98 per cent of outdoor coverage will become available. Currently, the company serves nearly 92 per cent of the UK and has 10,000 masts, 1,000 of which accommodate the London area within the M25 region. 3 is aiming to extend the coverage outside London, and has 12,855 sites planned. This will give the country 98 per cent coverage and according to Mr Russell, each of the masts will support 7.6Mbps HSDPA internet.

He said: “We want 3.5 to four million handset users by the end of 2010. The perception in the marketplace today is that 3 has a weak network - and it was deserved - our early handsets didn't work very well. How to change this legacy perception? Have a good network.”

At the moment, 3 is the smallest UK major carrier, however, with its dongles, it has 37 per cent of the mobile broadband market. This equates to 1.4 million customers.

Plans for the future includes more Android handsets in 2010. Mr Russell continued: “I think Android is important. We've launched Spotify softly, but you'll see more from us, with a bigger push in the next couple months as more Spotify-enabled handsets become available.”

And no iPhone?

So that's it then. The focus on Android and lack of new handsets means I'll be definitely leaving 3 when my contract ends soon.

The range of phones is very disappointing. That's why they are a weak network.

Give 3 a chance

I'm a 3 customer and I will not be leaving them. We must stick with them to give the underdog a chance to compete with the big guns.

Range of phones is improving

Mobiles available on 3 are improving with every month that goes by.

They have been listening to customers and even started to release phones without their apps pre-installed, but to be downloaded later.

It's these apps that hold up the release of phones on the 3 network.

Re:iPhone - when?

Ask them for it now.

I rang to do the same thing, cancel my contract and go elsewhere to get an iPhone.

They are now sending me an iPhone, should be getting it at some point today...

We need more 3 network masts in the North-east (Sunderland).

Coverage

Definitely need more coverage in the north east. Signal is so poor up this way (Newcastle/Consett).

Again give them a chance

I have had an Orange contract for a couple of years and lately the signal is rubbish, whereas my other half has a contract on 3 and the signal is excellent. As soon as my contract is up on Orange I will be changing to 3. And they also are better value for money, like all-you-can-eat data plans with 2,000 minutes and 5,000 minutes to other 3 phones. What else can you ask for?

iPhone

Currently with O2 but I'm changing to 3 next week. Read lots of poor reviews about 3, just hope I'm not making a mistake.

Although having read reviews for all other network providers they are pretty much all the same.

Re:iPhone

I'm about to leave O2 for 3 as well, and having read 3 reviews I'm slightly worried, but fingers crossed 3 won't let us down, hey. :)

Emergency Services Only when used downstairs

Still have poor reception in Raunds, Northamptonshire. Can only get a signal upstairs. Keeps saying "Emergency Calls Only" downstairs. Orange and Vodafone / Asda and O2 work fine. This is in August 2011.
